Lan Tan (Orchid Lake)

Originally built by the Dutch, it was once called Hong Mao Pi, with “Hong Mao” meaning “red hair,” a nickname for the Dutch. The name Lan Tan, while often translated as “Orchid Lake,” also references 荷蘭, the modern Mandarin name for Holland.
The main campus of Chiayi University is located right next to the lake, adding to the area’s vibrant atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit
While the season doesn’t matter too much for visiting Lan Tan or Ren Yi Tan, the water level can be low at both reservoirs if there hasn’t been much rain.
What’s more important is the time of day. Around noon, it can get quite hot, especially at Ren Yi Tan, where the walkway has absolutely no shade. For a more comfortable experience, mornings or late afternoons are ideal.
Both spots are quite popular during weekends and holidays, but if you’re looking for a quieter, more peaceful visit, weekdays are the best time to go.
